Access To and From Kenmare

The house that we will be using for the Summer School in County Kerry is located in the little village of Tuosist on the Beara Peninsula. The closest larger town is Kenmare. Bottom line, the easiest way to get to the house, called Castleview, is by car. If you don’t have a car, try and come with someone who does.

There is bus service, but only two times on Sundays. It is listed below with various ways to access Kenmare. Once you’re in Kenmare, there is taxi service and it will cost about €20 to get to Castleview, which is about 20 minutes or 10 miles away.

The closest airport to Kenmare is Kerry Airport at Farranfore, which is about 50 minutes car journey from the town. Cork airport is 80 minutes drive away. The most direct route from the airport is via the N22 road which links Killarney and Cork. Turn off at the bridge for Kenmare on the R569, which is well signposted.

Directions for arriving by car from Kenmare to Castleview House:

  • Leave Kenmare on N71 by going over the steel band bridge in the direction of Beara Peninsula via the Castletownbere, or Ring of Beara Road.
  • Turn Right immediately after crossing the bridge onto R571, towards Castletownbere. The sea will be on your right-hand side.
  • Go straight for about 20 minutes or roughly 10 miles, until you get to the Lakehouse Pub, on the R-hand side of the road. [Pictured at right.]
  • Take the first R-hand turn, about 50 yds. past the pub. It is a narrow road, so go slowly.
  • Continue to the end of the road where you will see a cul de sac. Just before the cul de sac, about 30 yds., there is a road that branches left. [These are rural roads so there are no names.] Take this road and proceed for about half a mile to the crossroads in Tuosist. Post office on the L-hand side.
  • Turn Right, and continue for about half a mile. Road is narrow and windy, proceed slowly.
  • When bends end, you will see 2 stone cottages on L-hand side, followed by a yellow bungalow on L-hand side. Then, 2 Westland Holiday homes, one large, one small.
  • NB: if you start to go downhill, you’ve gone too far.

Next is Castleview House indicated by a grey-barred gate in a stone wall. There is a tarred drive that goes right up to the house, which sits on a hill.
